1. Don’t get baptized just because someone told you to.
Some of us are people pleasers, and there’s not much we won’t do because we think it will make someone happy. But, being baptized is not one of those things you should do for someone else.
Being baptized is a public profession, but it’s still a personal decision. It’s a symbol of your inward relationship with Christ as you tell the world you are following Jesus. You wouldn’t (hopefully) have a wedding and marry someone just because your mom or pastor told you that you should, and you shouldn’t get baptized just because someone told you to do it. Your pastor, family, and friends mean well. They love you and want to see you have a great relationship with God, but baptism is a decision you have to make for yourself.
2. Don’t get baptized to “get right with God.”
Baptism is a symbol of someone’s inward relationship with Jesus. It’s a picture of when Jesus died, was buried, and then rose again. It’s also a picture of how, when we are saved, we die to our sin and are raised back up with new life in Jesus Christ. If you aren’t right with God, being baptized won’t automatically make you right with God.
If you’ve never been baptized and you have been saved, you probably do need to look into being baptized. It’s the first thing the Bible tells us to do after we’ve given our life to Jesus. But, don’t go into being baptized thinking it’s going to be some magical experience that will automatically fix your relationship with God.
3. Don’t get baptized because you’re looking for a “fresh start.”
One of the many great things about God is that He cares much more about our future than He does our past. No matter how far we’ve strayed, if we turn to Him, the Lord will accept us with open arms. Some people want to get baptized because they think it will provide them a fresh start. But, if you don’t start with a real relationship with Jesus, then baptism won’t be that fresh start for you. Baptism is a picture of our relationship with Christ, and it’s that relationship that will give us a fresh start. Baptism might be a part of your renewed life and focus, but it won’t be the start of it.
4. Don’t get baptized for an emotional high.
Baptism is an incredible experience. Your friends and family will likely come to see you take this incredible step. People will cheer. Everyone is excited. Taking that step of obedience feels great because you know you are on the right track. But, like most good things, some people want to get baptized simply for the emotional experience. But, baptism shouldn’t be an emotional experience. It’s a public profession that you are now following Jesus with your life. Once the emotions fade, the relationship with Christ should still be solid.
So, why should I be baptized?
Baptism is like a wedding ring that symbolizes marriage. If you take off your ring, you’re still married. But, with it on, it shows the rest of the world that you’re in a committed relationship. Baptism is that symbol of your relationship with Jesus.
If you have asked Jesus to save you, but you haven’t been baptized, baptism is your next step. Check out our Baptism page to learn more about Baptism or sign up to be baptized. ]]>
