“Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony…” (John 4:39)
I started walking to a little country church beside my house when I was twelve years old. Like many churches, Sunday morning was mostly a time for…you guessed it, Sunday School. The only problem was that I was the only kid from birth to about forty years old. Thankfully for me, there was a Sunday School teacher named Ms. Margaret. She showed up every single week like it was a room full of excited kids. It wasn’t. It was an idiot kid with a track record of doing idiotic things with his idiot brothers. All three of us were more likely to be in prison one day than finish high school. She simply showed up each week prepared and kept sharing what Jesus had done for her and her life. One day “I believed in Him too because of her testimony”. Fast forward a few years later and I’m teaching a Sunday School class for teenagers as a teenager myself. I was terrible at it, but this church just needed warm bodies. As I think back to that original group of people, many also came to believe because of what started with her simply sharing good news.
The woman’s brief testimony in John 4 sparked a wave of faith in her town. Often we underestimate how a small act or word at just the right time can ignite hope and belief in others. A short devotional, text of Scripture, or listening ear can spark a fire. As we share from our hearts, God will use it to spread good news. If God can use a trashy woman that’s an outcast and a teenage boy that was way worse than the trashy woman, then the good news is He can and wants to use you too!
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
