“People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

My wife’s father is probably my favorite person to watch when he’s eating.  I’m intrigued with how he’ll mix anything like chocolate chip cookies on top of his bologna sandwich that also has mayonnaise, cheese and crushed up chips.  I love to eat (and eat a ton by the way), but my favorite part is that my father in-law claims that he’s never felt full in his life.  I guess, he just either quits eating because he’s out of food or because people are staring at him or maybe he just has something else to do.  Most normal people do feel full, but the problem with appetites is they are never truly satisfied.  They keep coming back.  That’s why this temptation can be so dangerous.

Picture this: Jesus, after fasting for 40 days, must have been starving. His appetite for food was surely screaming at Him. Satan seized the opportunity to suggest that He could turn stones into bread. After all, wouldn’t satisfying that physical hunger be natural and understandable? But Jesus saw through the temptation. He knew that there’s something deeper than our physical appetites. We often find ourselves in similar situations. Maybe it’s the tempting aroma of our favorite comfort food, the allure of substances that promise an escape, the pursuit of thrills and adventure, or the unquenchable desire of lusting for something or someone else. These desires are like whispers in our minds, saying, “You need this to be happy and fulfilled.” But let’s counter that with the truth: God is enough. He satisfies our needs according to His wisdom and timing. Our identity as children of God assures us that we lack nothing essential.

So, the next time your appetite for something worldly tempts you, pause and ask yourself, “Is this a true need, or is it a craving that can wait?” Don’t give in to the appetite’s whispers that say, “But you need it and want it, so… DO IT.” Instead, remember the words of Jesus: “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”  God is the only one that can truly satisfy the deepest cravings of your heart.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
