“You must not test the Lord your God.” (Matthew 4:7)
Confession time.
My wife made a post about our kids a few years back and tagged me in it. I noticed that several people were commenting and bragging about my kids. They were saying really nice things about them and I assumed that equaled me being an awesome parent as well lol. Here’s the sad truth. The next day I noticed going back to post to look for more comments and likes. There’s obviously nothing wrong with being proud of your children or being thankful when others are praising their character. The danger was I noticed that I was looking to see “who” was commenting and liking it. I remember thinking, “what am I doing? Who cares if it has 1,000 likes and comments or zero!” The temptation of seeking affirmation from others is something we’re all too familiar with in this digital age. It’s like a modern-day struggle, right? We post, we share, we seek likes, comments, and the validation of an online audience. The question is, are we looking for approval in all the wrong places?
Imagine Jesus, standing on the pinnacle of the temple, with the devil suggesting He jump down to gain public recognition, with crowds watching, expecting the angels to rescue Him. The devil was challenging Jesus to prove His identity to the world, seeking affirmation from the public. In a similar way, we find ourselves lured by the allure of likes, comments, and online recognition, hoping to feel significant and affirmed by the masses. But here’s the truth: we don’t need to perform for anyone’s approval because we’re already loved and approved by God, thanks to Jesus. His acceptance is unconditional, and His love doesn’t depend on the number of likes we get on our posts or in life.
So, the next time you’re tempted to seek affirmation in the digital world (or real world), ask yourself, “Am I testing God’s love by looking for likes?” Don’t give in to the approval’s whispers that say, “But, you will be loved and celebrated so…SEEK IT”.” Instead, remember the Father’s love is more than enough.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
