“Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)
Have you ever done something nice for someone else for the wrong reason? We usually don’t say this stuff out loud but I’m afraid that too many times we are loving others so they will:
– Love us back
– Make us feel better about ourselves
– Maybe return the favor in the future
Jesus changed the game with His New Commandment. Everything that we are and called to be, gets summed up in 7 words. Love others as I have loved you. I can truly love others without expecting them to love me back, approve of me, like me, validate me, or even give me something else in return. I get to love people as I have been loved by Jesus.
So how does that look in real life? Need to forgive someone that hurt you? But what if they don’t deserve it? Thankfully Jesus loved and forgave me when I didn’t deserve it. It took me several years to understand this concept. The New Testament isn’t a bunch of new and better commands to follow. Everything in the New Testament after Jesus came back to life is simply this one new command being practiced in thousands of different ways each and every day.
Jesus gives us a new commandment to love others with no strings attached!
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
