I have noticed much more family pictures lately that will have the parents or grandparents and then talk about the legacy of generations that came from them. Maybe people are doing it more or maybe it’s just because I’m getting older. My wife’s family did a large family picture a few years back and here parents were holding a sign that said, “all because two people fell in love”. She’s part of an all daughter home, what can I say. But I think there’s more to it than sentimental family pictures.
We all want significance and purpose. I’d even argue it’s actually a basic human need that God has wired into all of us. There is some “target” out there but sadly most of us never stop to think about what that target might be. I think you can see it in the very beginning of creation. God created us to be fruitful and multiply. That means He wants us to leave a legacy of generations after us. That is physically true with children, but also spiritually true as well. Maybe the biggest lie we’ve believed is that Jesus’ final words don’t apply to all of us who follow Him.
The truth is..that every one of us has the potential to leave a lasting legacy long after we are gone. God has put you in specific places. Where you work, live, hangout or go to school are all places where you get to “go”. It’s not some super weird or difficult strategy either. You just become aware of the people in your life and make it intentional to help them see how to live and love like Jesus is through you. Most of it will probably be way more caught than taught.
Jesus gives us a new purpose to help others live and love like He did!
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
