“Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.” (Matthew 6:12)
Have you ever felt so wronged that you kept a mental list of grudges? Years back, someone really hurt one of my kids, and I allowed the bitterness to negatively impact every aspect of my life. One day I broke down and told God how this person had damaged me. I asked God to destroy them. Sorry I grew up in LA (Lower Arabia, Ohio). It didn’t feel right, so I changed my prayer to “God, just give them what they deserve!” That felt much better until I felt a whisper, “Do you want Me to give you what you deserve too?”
Suddenly I was overwhelmed by God’s mercy. It was a great reminder how Jesus was sent to cancel my own unpayable sin debt. How could I not extend the same grace? That day I made the decision to forgive. I literally said out loud, “I cancel his debt to me.” It was really freeing until I realized that forgiveness is a habit that I’d have to practice the next day again and again. Unresolved anger imprisons us. But Jesus calls us to break free through forgiveness: canceling the debt just as He did for us. It’s a decision we make by faith, trusting God to heal our wounds and set things right in His timing. As we let go of bitterness, we too will experience the liberating power of forgiveness. One habit to help you with anger is to forgive. I’ll be honest though, it’s not a one and done. That’s why we call all of these habits.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
