“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” (1 Timothy 6:17)
We have two kids in college at the same time. Recently I noticed how greed had crept into my heart. I started calculating how much money we have, how much we make and how much we have to spend each month. I started to become a little obsessed with every time we spent money. My desire for more and more savings ultimately led to anxiety. Where had I lost sight that God promises to provide all I need?
Greed whispers lies that true life is found in accumulating wealth and possessions. But only God offers true life. Should we all be smart with our money and save? Absolutely! However, I forgot the most important thing. I have been blessed more than I could ever imagine and everything God gives me is enough. There’s freedom for us all in loosening our grip on resources and relying on Him alone. It’s all His anyways. So what habit helps us with greed and the lie that I need more? Generosity. Make it a consistent habit to give to others. Bonus points if you give when they least expect it (or deserve it). That’s how God works with us too!
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
