Your Highlight Reel | Friday – Week 12

Read The Daily

“Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.” (Galatians 6:4)

“We struggle with insecurity because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” – Steven Furtick

Social media has given us a window to compare ourselves to everyone we know (and so many we don’t) like never before.  Someone has a cuter baby than us. A bigger house. A nicer car. A better job. A more exciting life. And we aren’t only aware of it when we interact with them, it’s in our face every time we login to Facebook or see someone’s filet mignon on Instagram. We are prone to compare because we have constant access to people to compare ourselves to. Comparison leads to jealousy and robs us of all joy. It says, “What I am isn’t enough.” It’s a lie, a snare, a trap. It’s one I fall into incredibly often, and I’m a comparer by nature. Here’s the thing for me and my comparison trap.  There’s no win.  If I think I’m beter than you than pride slips in.  If I’m not, then I become discontent with my own life.  Neither one is beneficial.

Jealousy rises when we lose sight of God’s greatness. If He alone sits on the throne of heaven and earth, why compete with fellow people He created? So the habit to help my jealous heart is to celebrate.  Celebrate others every time you get a chance, especially the ones that you’re prone the most to compare.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
