Read James 5:16 & 2 Corinthians 13:11

If you are like me, when you have a strained relationship, you get prideful and refuse to back down. Many times I will make an argument or situation much worse because I’m focused on winning an argument or proving a point instead of repairing the relationship. If I would simply suck it up and do what was best for the relationship instead of being prideful, then I would have a much easier time in those situations.

Most of us have strained relationships because of ourselves. If you’ve let someone down you love, there are five action steps you can take.

  1. Admit to the specific actions and attitudes. Confess what you did!

  2. Don’t make excuses. Accept the blame. Don’t try to shift blame. Don’t explain why you did what you did. Just take responsibility.

  3. Accept the consequences. Don’t think that since you apologize the consequences disappear.

  4. Change your behavior. Don’t just feel bad and beg for forgiveness. Actually change how you act.

  5. Ask for forgiveness. Don’t sidestep around this one. Ask the question, “will you forgive me?”

Being the bigger person in a tense situation is rarely easy, but it’s often exactly what we need to do to repair the relationships in our lives. Who do you need to take these steps with today?
