A few years ago, someone came to me, and I could tell they were angry. They confronted me by starting out the conversation by saying, “I can’t believe you would say those things about me.” I was so confused. I had no clue what this person was talking about. After asking a few questions, I came to find out that they were told I said something that I had never said. My words were twisted to fit someone else’s agenda.
Sometimes I think this is the same thing God goes through when we feel guilty about things we’ve asked forgiveness for. When we’ve confessed and apologized for our sin, God forgives us. He always has. When we feel guilty about something God has already forgiven us for, this guilt isn’t from God. Even our biggest sins aren’t too big for God’s grace. We might have to face consequences for our actions, but we can know that God has forgiven us.
Don’t allow guilt to paralyze you and keep you from living the life that God has for you. Ask for forgiveness, accept that you messed up and the consequences from that, and move on to living your life the way God wants you to.
