Colossians 3:5 When I first became a Christian, the church I went to talked a lot about us worshipping idols. They would read passages out of the Bible that talked about people bowing down to statues of people and animals and praying to those things. I always thought it was goofy because I had never seen anyone bow down to a statue or pray to it. I didn’t think I had to worry about the commandment that said, “you shall not commit idolatry” because I didn’t see myself starting anytime soon. As I got older, though, I realized that idolatry is about more than just worshipping a statue, it’s about valuing anything above God in my life. While very few of us have probably literally bowed down and worshipped a false God, we do worship things all the time. God wants to be the primary focus of our life. Anything we place above God is an idol. Anything that seems more valuable to us than our relationship with God is a false god that we worship. We try to replace God with so many things. We can become obsessed with money, popularity, sex, and more. God created sex to be an awesome thing to be enjoyed between a man and wife, but we twist it and become obsessed with it. Countless people have sacrificed their integrity and relationship with God to worship the false God of sex. There isn’t anything wrong with sex if you do it God’s way. When you veer and place it over God, though, it becomes idolatry. If you were honest with yourself today, there are probably some things you value more than your relationship with God? What are those false Gods that you need to get taken care of in your life.]]>
