Read 2 Kings 3:13-20
Like any good teenager, I constantly asked my mom for money. It would never fail. As soon as I began talking to her, she would quickly ask “What do you want now? One time, I asked her why she always said that. She said, probably only half joking, that the only time I talked to her was when I wanted something. While she may have been kidding, that bothered me because I realized it was only a slight exaggeration.
Sometimes I wonder if this is how God feels. When I pray, I am constantly asking for things. I ask Him to take care of my problems, to fix things that aren’t working out, and even to bless me by taking care of me or through giving me things. I wonder if I sometimes view God as my own personal genie. Sure, I try to live my life and do things the way He wants me to, but do I do those things because He is God and because I love Him or because I think if I live right then He will grant my wishes?
In the story, Elisha is somewhat rude to the kings. He wanted them to know that our God isn’t some genie that grants us wishes or we can just come to where we are in trouble as a last resort. God should be our first option because He is our only option.]]>
