Read 2 Peter 1:5-9

Former college football coach Lou Holtz once said, “No one has ever drowned in sweat.”  Often times in our lives, we have a common misconception about our faith. We usually neglect the work in between dreaming big and realizing our dreams.  There’s frequently a huge difference between inspiration and participation, and that’s where the perspiration comes in to play. Faith is not a free pass or a get out of jail free card, it’s a task order.  Many times in our life, our faith will require us to get dirty, to become uncomfortable, and maybe even hit rock bottom before God fulfills his promise.

Sometimes, in our lives, God is calling us to action without knowing his ultimate goal.  In the case of Elisha, God was promising that water and healthy rains  would come, but he wanted the people to demonstrate their faith by going out and preparing for the rain by digging ditches first. Even though the people were close to death from thirst and dehydration, God wanted to see the people to trust Him at their weakest moment.  God will certainly enrich our lives, but we have to take the initiative and do our part as well.

Only God can send water, but sometimes He wants you to dig a ditch. He says water will come, but you first have to start digging ditches.  Ultimately, God brought the rain, but it came in his timing and only after the people had dug ditches.  Think of an area in your life today that you need God’s help.  If it’s repairing a relationship, make that awkward first phone call.  If you are having money issues, set up that monthly budget.  God wants what is best for those who love him, but sometimes he wants to see us dig a ditch first.]]>
