Read Genesis 39:3-6
Have you ever caught yourself falling into the “if I don’t help myself, then no one will” mentality? While it’s good on many levels to be independent and be able to take care of ourselves, we often take this to the extreme. We can easily over do it to the point that we do what’s best for us or will make us the most happy with little regard to how it affects other people…even the most important people in our lives.
Even when Joseph was imprisoned, he found favor because he surrendered his situation to God and continued to serve others. Even when he had been wronged and put in a tough situation, he didn’t allow himself to become focused solely on himself. He realized that his relationships weren’t about him, they were about God and the people God put into his life.
No relationship ever suffered because someone served someone else too much. No one ever goes to marriage counseling because they are tired of being served by their spouse. Not many family arguments ever start because people are there too much for family members. People are rarely fired because they do too good of a job. When you serve others and make your life about others, the results are usually positive.
Would you say that, in general, you focus more on yourself or other people?
