Read Acts 8:20-23
My wife is frugal, and she’s a saver when it comes to money. She doesn’t like to spend very much, and she often thinks long and hard before pulling the trigger on any financial decisions. This is good for me, because I’m a spender. When I was little, I already had my birthday money spent before the day was over. I’ve always thought of money as a means to get stuff that I wanted, but, a few years ago, God began to change my mind on that. He showed me how materialistic I was, and how much more He could do if I was generous with my money instead of using it to buy myself a bunch of stuff. I began to tithe, and I began to be more generous with what I had in general. I quickly learned that God’s blessings because I was generous often were more satisfying to me than whatever I would have purchased with the money.
In the Bible, God blessed Joseph because He was willing to surrender what he had to God and serve others with it. Even though it was a horrible situation at the time, Joseph became much more wealthy and blessed than his family because he had been sold as a slave. While most of us struggle to trust God with our money and refuse to sacrifice it to serve others, Joseph’s experiences showed him that surrendering to God and serving others is always the better choice…even when it comes to our wallets.
How do you view money? Is it something there so you can survive, or is it something you used to buy stuff that makes you happy or feel important? Are you stingy with it, or are you generous with it so God can do even more through your life?
