Israel had rejected God as their leader because they wanted a king like all the other nations, so God gave them a man who looked the part. Saul was a good looking man who stood a head taller than the rest of the men. He looked like a king on the outside, but it wasn’t in his heart to be king. Instead of coming forward when he was chosen, he hid among the baggage. He knew he had been chosen, and he hid from the responsibility. Saul looked like he would be a great king, but he had flaws that would cause him trouble all of his life as king. Our culture is dominated by people who look good on the outside. We even often listen to and follow these people. We are tricked into focusing on the outside of a person more than his or her heart. God values the opposite. He uses people who, even if they don’t seem to have it all together, have a faithful heart towards Him. Spend a few minutes with God asking Him to help you look towards people who have faithful hearts as an example instead of following people who just look the part.
