Bible In A Year | Read: Luke 24

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”  Luke 24:36-39

Overview of Chapter

Jesus rises from the dead and ascends into heaven. Some find it hard to believe this could have happened, but look at the reaction of his disciples. They had to have been convinced of the truth of it or they would not have continued to be followers of Jesus. All of them suffered for their faith, but all continued to believe in Jesus.

We follow a living Savior. Just as he had victory over his own death, he will have victory over our sins and deaths. One day we will see it for ourselves, but today we accept it by faith.

Thoughts on the verses

There is one 100% guarantee about life: your life will eventually end. It’s a morbid thought, but the very real eventuality is that we all will experience death. It’s literally when our body ends up in a box. No analogy needed. A box, six feet under. Death is the great equalizer in life. It’s the one thing no one can avoid.

But death isn’t the end of the story. The resurrection of Jesus gives us the ability to live beyond our funeral. No one else in history has predicted their death and at the same time, predicted their resurrection from the dead. Not only did Jesus say it was going to happen, there were over 500 witnesses that saw the resurrected Jesus. It’s a verifiable, historical fact.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ ranks as history’s most revolutionary event. One cannot deny that He shook the world in His day. But His life just as dramatically has shaped the course of history in our time. The Resurrection is the final proof that Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be. Because of the Resurrection, Jesus offers us help for today and hope for tomorrow.
