Read Ecclesiastes 6:7-9 No matter where I’ve been in my life, I’ve always looked forward to what’s next. When I was in school, I looked forward to being in college. In college, I just wanted to be out of school and get a job. When I had a job, I wanted to be married. Once married, I wanted kids. Not to long ago, I realized that I rarely just stopped to enjoy where I was in my life because I was so busy looking towards what was next. The author of Ecclesiastes talks about how everyone works to fulfill their appetites. But, even though everyone works really hard toward satisfying their selfish desires, the vast majority of people are still left unsatisfied in their life. He also points out that there is no apparent advantage for the wise over the fool. The author’s conclusion on this matter is that seeing what’s in front of you is better than looking around for something different or better. Always looking for the next best thing in our life is as fruitless as trying to chase the wind. Too often in our lives, we focus so much on the things that we want that we rob ourselves of being able to enjoy what God has already blessed us with. It’s so much better to embrace those things that God has already given to you than to always be focused on wanting more and more. Enjoying all that you have is so much better than longing for something else to make you happy. Whenever we adopt an attitude of gratitude, gratitude turns whatever we have into enough. Don’t go chasing the wind. It’s fine to have dreams of what God might do in your life in the future, but God wants you to enjoy the life He has given to you today. Reflect Are you the type of person who stays in the moment, or do you constantly spend time dreaming of the future or thinking about the past? While we can learn from the past and push toward things in the future, how can you begin to better appreciate the moment? Pray Share with God your hopes and dreams for the future. Tell Him you are trusting Him with your future and ask Him to help you enjoy all the great things in your life right now. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was the toughest part of your day?
- Where did you mess up today?
- Where did you see God today?
