Bible In A Year | Read: Hebrews 11

1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.  Hebrews 11:1-3

Overview of Chapter

This chapter is known as the faith hall of fame. It lists people who persevered through difficult circumstances because they had the faith to believe God would do what he said. The writer points out that they all died without seeing the promised Jesus.

The issue of obeying or disobeying God always comes down to immediate vs. long-term outcomes. Today, disobedience could lead to temporary pleasure, but could also lead to later problems. It also means disappointing Jesus, with whom we will spend eternity. Do we have the faith to obey even when the positive, long-term outcomes cannot be seen?

Thoughts on the verses

By faith, Abraham left his hometown and went to a new place as God asked him.

By faith, Sarah was able to bear a child although both she and Abraham were very old.

By faith, Noah built a big ark for something that God said would happen but was yet to be seen.

By faith, the small David defeated the giant Goliath.

By faith, Moses and God’s people walked through the Red Sea as if it were dry land.

By faith, the wall of Jericho fell after God’s people marched around it for seven days.

By faith, Daniel was safe even though he was thrown into the lions’ den.

None of these people lived to see with their eyes how God was going to save His people. What they did see was the way He worked in their lives and in the lives of those they knew. God met their needs, answered their prayers, and protected them.

May you and I choose to have faith by believing and hoping in God. Always remember all the wonderful things He has done in your life and the life of others. Keep on having faith in Him.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for the stories of faith in the Bible. Help me to get to know You more through the faith of others and my personal experience with You. Amen.
