Read Luke 14:28-33 At our two church buildings, I have put together literally a dozen of the same small, cheap bookshelves from Wal Mart. We have these economical little guys in almost every classroom and at our welcome center. Because I’ve put together so many, it now takes me two minutes to assemble one. This skill has came with experience, though. The first bookshelf I put together, I did backwards and had to take it apart and start from the beginning. On the next one, I assembled it incorrectly and snapped an important piece of the unit. I became much more efficient and effective when I knew what I was getting into beforehand. During some of Jesus’ teaching, He likened our spiritual lives to building a tower or going to war. Before taking on such a big undertaking, a wise person will count the cost it will take to complete the task to see if they have the resources to complete it. These people gather all the facts before stepping out. Many times, we equate having faith and knowing facts as two polar opposites. If we get all the facts, then, it’s assumed that we don’t have faith in God to take care of us. On the other hand, those who want all the facts will look at those who still step out to do something for God even when it doesn’t make sense as foolish. But, facts and faith aren’t always opposite. Before we step out to do something in faith, we should know the facts of what we’re stepping out into. However, just because something doesn’t make sense, doesn’t mean it’s not right. Sometimes, having faith is stepping out even knowing things might now work out the way we want them to. We serve a big God who is able and willing to come through for us when we need Him. When we are going to step out in faith to serve Him, He is able to be there for us. But, even if He doesn’t come through for us the way we want Him to, He is still there for us every step of the way. Reflect Are you a more facts based person or faith based person? Do you make most of your decisions based on what you believe or feel or based on facts? Pray Talk to God today about any big decisions you have coming up. Ask God to give you wisdom to make a good choice. Ask Him to help you count the cost, but to also have the courage to step out in faith. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was the toughest part of your day?
- Where did you mess up today?
- Where did you see God today?
