Daily Reading: Philippians 3:16-21
Big Idea This Week:
Don’t play the wrong role in the story
Questions to think about:
Nobody likes to think of themselves as a villain, but think about what a villain does in every story. They try to make everything about them and for them. That hits a little closer to home doesn’t it? A villain’s motto is “I do great things for me”. The problem is in every story the person that tries to be the main character when they’re not automatically becomes the bad guy.
It’s easy to see a two-year-old playing with a toy truck or doll and laugh at the “It’s mine” attitude. But even adults often live by this kind of thinking: “It’s all about me.” Christians, however, know that the good life is found not in the pursuit of personal pleasure but in a life centered on God’s will. Self-centeredness is an enemy of true joy.
The problem is selfishness dominates our current culture.
Private homes are guarded by a fence and protected by a home security system. I am drawn to this. The privacy of my home serves as a wonderful refuge after a busy day with people. The spiritual consequences, however, scare me.
Just like every villain, being self-focused is a slow path to destruction. True joy is rooted in a relationship with Jesus and helping others find the same.
Don’t be the villain. Protect yourself from self-centeredness. Sacrifice your desires for his bigger purpose! Where would others say you tend to be selfish? How can you allow God to change that?
