Read Proverbs 11:24-25 As the powerball winnings soared over the last several weeks, I saw several memes people posted on social media saying that they would love a chance to prove that hitting it big wouldn’t change them. As comical as it is, it points to a sad thing. So many people who come into money quickly, end up with ruined lives. We think it’s money that’s going to make all of our problems go away. But, money usually just magnifies our problems instead. When we read the Bible, we find that the way God works is often backwards from our conventional wisdom. This proverb tells us that a person who gives freely to others of what they have will gain even more. However, those who keep things to themselves excessively will come to poverty. The proverb explains this a little further. It says that a generous person will prosper. Why? because people who refresh others will be refreshed. The principle is that those who help others and give generously will be helped and be given to generously. While it’s smart to be a saver when it comes to your finances, what isn’t smart is to hoard everything God has blessed us with for ourselves. In God’s view, the greatest thing we can do with what He has freely given to us is to freely give it away to others. This makes even more room for Him to give even more to us. Our tendency is to keep everything we have for ourselves. We look to money to give us security, enjoyment, and fulfillment. But, God wants us to find all of that in Him. When we give, not only are we sharing God’s love with people God loves, we are telling God that He is our security, joy, and fulfillment in our life. Don’t spend your life hoarding all the blessings God has given to you. Give it away generously because it was freely given to you, first. Reflect Who is the most generous person you know? Do they seem joyful to give or do they give reluctantly? What can you learn from them? Pray Talk to God today about the ways you might become more generous in your life. Ask God to help you follow through with these things. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was the toughest part of your day?
- Where did you mess up today?
- Where did you see God today?
