Read Exodus 18:14-19
A few weeks ago, I was looking through old family pictures. While many of the pictures made me laugh because they brought back good memories from childhood, some others make me laugh and think “What was I thinking?!” or “What were my parents thinking?!” In one picture, I am wearing a yellow suit with shorts, high red dress socks, and shiny black shoes. Why my parents thought that was a good look, I’ll never know. More embarassing, though, were the late elementary school pictures with an island haircut (think short bowl cut on top of the head) with stripes shaved above my ears) and a smiley face necklace. I’ve had some questionable haircuts and clothing choices, but I’m glad I grew out of that particular style.
We all have regrets from our past. Whether they are goofy as in a bad hairstyle or poor choice of clothing, or something more serious like bad decisions or picking up a bad habit, we all have some regrets. In the passage, Jethro told Moses what he was doing was going to one day become a regret. Jethro urged Moses to change, so he would avoid regretting it in the future.
While we can’t go back and fix our past regrets, we can stop ourselves from experiencing regret in our future over our decisions today. What are you doing now that you need to stop? What decisions are you making, habits you’ve formed, or way of life will cause regret and destruction in the future? Make the decisions, like Moses did, to stop it today to avoid regretting it in the future.]]>
