If you’ve ever struggled with weight and decided you were going to try to do something about it, you know that, as soon as you make that commitment, you’ll suddenly have the opportunity to gorge yourself on pizza, desserts, or any other weakness you might have. There’s something about making a decision to better yourself that opens up all sorts of temptation. It never fails, as soon as you try to be better, something happens to derail you. Whether it’s with food and you’re stuck at an all you can eat buffet, or you’re trying to be better with your finances and your generosity and the car suddenly breaks, something always seems to happen.
Part of following Christ in our life is learning how to lean on God and keep going through temptation. There are many commitments you might make to get closer to God or become a better spouse, parent, friend, coworker, follower of Jesus, etc over the course of the next year. Maybe you want to repair the temple (your body) and get healthy over the next several months. You might want to stop just playing church and actually get involved in what God is up to in your church. You may even want to double down on your finances, or make spending time with God and reading his word more of a priority in the next year.
Whatever your commitment for 2014 is, you will face considerable temptation to compromise as soon as you make it. The trick is learning to lean on Christ to help you overcome the temptation and continue on.
