Read Genesis 12:1 & 1 Peter 1:18-21

A ministry to serve the homeless started several years ago in downtown Huntington from a doughnut and a conversation. Now, this ministry has grown in size to where a full breakfast is offered every weekend along with clothing, personal hygiene items, and from time to time medical care from Marshall University’s Medical School. Several members of our church volunteer at this ministry on a regular basis, and we had an outreach at the riverbank a few years ago.

If you’ve never been around the homeless ministry, it can be an uncomfortable setting. At first, it’s a challenge to find your comfort zone, but after a few conversations, and good stories you feel like you’ve been around for ages.

If we’re all honest, we’ve probably felt that lump creep into our stomach when we pass a homeless individual at an intersection or walked a different way to avoid an awkward interaction. That’s the cool part about God. Often times, to see the plan he has for our lives, it requires us to step out of what’s comfortable. If you think about it, you learn more about yourself in those awkward moments, and those moments you where you failed than when success came easily or without trial.

Choose an area of your life today where you can step out of your comfort zone. Perhaps it’s volunteering at church or checking out Connect on a Wednesday night. You never know what God has planned for your life when you’re willing to take a leap of faith.]]>
