Bible In A Year | Read: Romans 14
1 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. Romans 14:1-4
Thoughts on the verses
We all have certain matters we feel strong about. Should Christians let their kids trick or treat…or just create a new harvest festival to make it Christ honoring? Should Christians ever drink or watch an R-rated movie? Paul addressed how to handle our differences.
Overview of Chapter
The eating of meat that had been sacrificed to idols was a controversial subject for the church in Rome. For some, it was a great way to save money on meat. The idol meant nothing to these people, so eating the leftover meat was not a problem for them. For others, maybe former idol worshipers, the meat was associated with something of which they were afraid. They thought they were more holy because they avoided something they considered evil. Paul says they were the weaker ones because they were still afraid of powerless idols. The stronger ones were told to treat the weaker ones fears in a loving and understanding way.
We have different controversies today, but the principles are the same. We want to claim our right to do as we please, but we need to pause and ask what the loving thing to do is.
