Read James 3:13-18
When I was a kid, my parents would always try to get me to do things I didn’t want to do. Things like chores where I’d have to make my bed, clean my room, or do dishes. They’d make me do stuff like go to church or play with my sister. I’d always try to get something out of these situations. I’d try to convince my mom to let me stay up past my bedtime if I cleaned my room, or I’d try to get my dad to buy me a toy if I went to church without acting up the entire time. I wanted to know what was in it for me. The answer was usually that I wouldn’t get whipped!
This has carried through in my adult life as well, though. When I’m in a situation where I have to do something I maybe don’t really want to do, I always try to get something out of those situations. I want to know what’s in it for me. If it’s not going to gain me anything, then I might as well not do it!
That’s not God’s plan for us, though. God wants us to serve people without looking for anything in return. He wants us to share His love in practical ways with other people because of how much He has loved us. While we always look at things like volunteering, serving, and being generous and try to figure out what’s in it for us, God wants us to look at those situations and ask ourselves, “how I can serve these people?”
