Read John 13:12-16
When I first got married, I was eager to show my new wife that I was handy around the house. Before work one day, she told me she wanted to hang some heavy items on the wall that evening when she got home. I told her that would be no problem. However, I had no clue what I was doing. I, like anyone in my situation, went to google to figure out what I needed and tried to do it. I went to lowe’s, got the anchors I needed and did a test run in a inconspicuous spot in our garage. When the time came to hang the item when my wife got home, I got to look like a legit handyman.
Many times, like my experiments with home improvement, we have to learn how to do something in secret before we can do anything in public. Many people want to help and serve in the public eye. They genuinely want to make a difference in people’s lives or the world, and they want to do it publicly. The problem, though, is that in God’s eyes, we must learn to serve in secret before we will ever be successful in serving in public.
God wants us to serve in secret, without looking for recognition or notoriety. He wants us to look to Him for our reward, not praise from other people. If we are faithful to serve in secret, He will take care of the reward.
