Read Mark 1:16-17 & John 21:19-22
Most of us have this idea that a “good Christian” never messes up. We think to be “good” we need to be the picture of perfection. Everything just right in our lives, and, if there is something less than perfect, we are supposed to do our best to hide it from view. God’s view of greatness isn’t perfection, it’s following Jesus.
When Jesus first called Peter to be His disciple, He told Peter to “Come, follow me.” His last words to Peter were “You must follow me.” Although he had to be reminded frequently, Peter never stopped following Jesus. Peter stumbled and messed up at times, but he always followed Jesus.
This is the primary characteristic of a true hero in God’s eyes. They always, no matter what, do their best to follow Jesus. They may mess up at times, they may stumble, or even fall, but they never stop trying to live like God wants them to live.
Would God call you a hero? Do you do everything you can do to follow Jesus even when you mess up?
