By many measures, Uzziah was a successful king. He had military might and success, and he was famous for the strength he brought to Judah. His enemies feared him. Then, he got it into his head to enter the temple and offer incense. Just in case he simply didn’t know better, the priests confronted him and told him that doing this was forbidden. Uzziah yelled at them and defied them and God. The Lord gave Uzziah leprosy because he did not know his place. He was a capable man as a commander and king, but God had consecrated priests, not kings, to offer incense in the temple. We can never succeed our way to favor with God. Only by following God’s Word will we have his blessing in what we do whether we have worldly success or not. Spend a few minutes to evaluate with God whether you are living your life and making decisions based on His Word.
