Read Romans 12:1-2 I have always been in awe of people who flip houses. As a matter of fact, the house my wife and I live in was renovated only a few years ago. I never saw the house before it was flipped, but I hear it had been in rough shape. When I walked into the house the first time, I would have never known it had been a run down mess just a short time beforehand. It felt new because it had been renovated. In the book of Romans, Paul urges Christians to offer their bodies up as a living sacrifice to God. A sacrifice that is holy and pleasing to God. The way to do that, he said, is by the renewing of your mind. Instead of living and believing like everyone else, Paul believed that Christians should stand out from the pattern of the world. And, what truly separated them from everyone else, should be the way they think and see the world. For Paul, how someone acted wasn’t what made them a holy and pleasing sacrifice to God. It was what they thought about. Paul doesn’t prescribe a twelve step program to have a different life. He doesn’t offer a bunch of self help tips to become a better you. He talks about being transformed. Our lives should be changed by God. That happens through God changing our thoughts by renewing our mind. It’s not about adding new beliefs and thoughts over top of your old overwhelming thoughts, it’s about allowing God’s truth to overwrite our old thoughts. This renewing makes us new. It makes us better. It renovates us into something completely different. All because of how we think. REFLECT: If someone could read your mind, would they say that the way you say you believe matches up with what you spend most of your time thinking about? PRAY: Take a few minutes today to pray for your family and close friends. Ask God to not only help you with your thought life, but also help those close to you who struggle with overwhelming thoughts. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was the toughest part of your day?
- Where did you mess up today?
- Where did you see God today?
