Bible In A Year | Read: 1 Thessalonians 2

17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. 18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way. 19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? 20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy. 1 Thessalonians 2:17-20

Overview of Chapter

Paul is pointing out that his ministry is motivated by his love for God and his people, not by what he can get out of it. In fact, he has suffered a great deal of loss in order to do what he is doing.

One of the ways we can evaluate spiritual leaders is by looking at what Paul says in this chapter. A leader who seems motivated by gaining money, respect, recognition or power is not following in the example of Paul. Paul gave up those things because he wanted to minister to others. If he corrected someone or taught something, it was for the benefit of his listener, not for his own benefit.
