Colossians 3:12-14 My grandmother passed away a few years ago. My favorite memory of my grandma is from when I was a kid. I stayed one summer at her house growing up. One day, my grandma cracked a joke that my dad reminded her of Dilbert, the cartoon character. I thought it was funny, so I told my dad about it when I saw him. My grandma got upset at me and told me she wouldn’t forget that I went behind her back. My grandma was an interesting lady who could be rough around the edges. Childhood Jimmy got upset thinking that his grandma was going to hate him forever! While my grandma eventually forgave me and things went back to normal, we often hold equally ridiculous and painful grudges over petty things. A loved one will say something hurtful, someone will let us down, or do something spiteful to us, and, instead of forgiving them or moving on, many times we hold on to these things and allow them to eat us up inside. Everytime we see them or hear someone mention them, we tense up inside. In some weird way, we think we are getting back at them, but, really, we are simply hurting ourselves. God tells us to forgive other people the way that God has forgiven us. We didn’t deserve forgiveness from our sin, but he did anyway. People may not deserve our forgiveness, and forgiving people doesn’t mean allowing them to continually walk all over us. But, God still asks us to forgive people to show them God’s love. He also tells us to forgive, so it doesn’t take over our lives. Don’t allow what someone did to you to keep haunting you. Forgive and let it go. That’s what God tells us to do because He cares for us. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:

  1. What was the best part of your day?
  2. What was the toughest part of your day?
  3. Where did you mess up today?
  4. Where did you see God today?
Reflect: If you could go back ten years and give your younger self advice about how to have a better family, what would you tell yourself? Pray: Think of those who have hurt you in the past that you’ve had difficulty forgiving. Ask God to help you be able to move on and offer forgiveness in the way God has forgiven you.
