Matthew 6:3 Here’s the funny thing about following God. You’re supposed to tell others about all the stuff you don’t want anyone to know. And you’re also supposed to keep secret all the good stuff you do? Ummmm, that doesn’t seem to work to my benefit. How about we reverse that, God? I can confess all of my awesomeness to whomever You’d like and I’ll keep my dirty little secrets to myself. Sounds like a plan. Nope? It was worth a try. But I get it. There’s a total difference in doing something good because it’s right versus doing something good because you want a reward for it. Spoiled kids get a piece of candy for using their manners. Good kids use their manners because it’s the right thing to do. (My kids, on the other hand, seem to not use their manners at all. So they don’t factor into this metaphor.) God wants righteous people, not just people who do the right thing. Let’s read that sentence again. God wants righteous people, not just people who do the right thing. Part of becoming like Christ is giving up the acknowledgement and entitlement that comes along with publicizing your good works. ———————————————————– This week’s Crosstraining comes from Southland Christian Church in Lexington, KY.
