Read 1 Corinthians 10:12 & Psalm 57:7 When I was in elementary school, once a week a lady would come into our class with puppets. I have no clue what it was all about, I just remembered she talked a lot about “warm fuzzies” and “cold pricklies” in reference to how we treat other people. Besides that, the only other thing I remember is her creepy puppets talking a lot about having self confidence. We talk a lot in our culture about the need to have self-confidence. The Bible, though, has a little different view of confidence than my second grade classes puppets did. In 1 Corinthians 10:12, Paul tells us that, if we think we are standing firm, we need to be careful that we don’t fall. The underlying message of this verse is that self-confidence isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Just when we think we got things covered, that’s when we’ll mess up. As special as we might be according to our second grade teachers, none of us are perfect. We mess up…usually a lot. King David, though, tells us what we can be confidence in in Psalm 57:7. He says that his heart is steadfast. In other words, David says he is standing firm. While we may think Paul would tell him to be careful because he might trip up, David was confident because his confidence wasn’t in himself. His confidence was in God. It’s not that we shouldn’t be confident in ourselves. It’s just that self-confidence isn’t all that helpful. What we really need is to cultivate a strong confidence in God. That’s where change really happens. We might be weak and sinful, but our God is all powerful, all loving, and unchanging. That’s something to be confident in. Reflect Are you naturally a self confident person? How would you describe the different between self confidence and God confidence? Pray Talk to God for a few minutes as you begin praying today about whether or not you have confidence in yourself. Ask God to help you have confidence in Him no matter what. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:

  1. What was the best part of your day?
  2. What was the toughest part of your day?
  3. Where did you mess up today?
  4. Where did you see God today?
DIG DEEPER: Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 17:32-50 What To Do: Read through this week’s passage several times….slowly. You may even want to try reading it in a few different translations such as NIV, NLT, ESV, NKJV, The Message, etc. Reading the passage a few times will give you a good overall feel for the passage. Bonus: try picking one verse out of the passage and memorize it throughout the week.]]>
