Read Matthew 13:24-26 I’m a sucker for any food that is pretty unhealthy. My favorite foods are pizza, ice cream, and anything deep fried. It seems like everytime I decide I want to start eating healthier, someone recommends we go out for pizza or my wife makes a big batch of tater tots. While those people aren’t trying to tempt me, we do have an enemy that will go into overtime trying to take us down when God is about to do something big in our life. After Jesus told the parable of the sower, he told another story. This one is a similar story called the parable of the weeds. In this parable, Jesus tells of a man who sowed good seed in his field only to have his enemy come and sabotage the field. The enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat during the middle of the night. When the wheat sprouted, weeds also appeared. When a servant asks if he should pull the weeds, the farmer tells him no. He wanted to allow both to grow together until the harvest when they could safely pull the weeds without harming the wheat. Jesus told this story to illustrate that, while on earth, those who hear the word, allow it to take root, and have God truly impact their life aren’t separated yet from everyone else. They still live their lives just like everyone else. Their reward, though, will come in the end. This parable also illustrates that, when God is doing a great work in our life, our enemy, Satan, will try to sabotage what God is doing in our life. He will throw every distraction and temptation our way. If you really seek to live your life God’s way, you’ll probably find that life will get busier, more distracting, and more difficult. The enemy wants to slow us down. Whenever busyness and distractions peak in our life, we can refocus by reminding ourselves of the work God must be starting in us that caused our enemy to attempt to distract us. We don’t have to die from busyness and distraction, we can focus on Jesus and life the life He has planned for us. REFLECT: Do you find that you become more busy and distracted when you’ve made a decision to get closer to God or better yourselves? What areas of your life does the enemy typically turn the heat up on? PRAY: Talk to Got today about your busy schedule. Ask Him to help you keep from getting distracted in your life, and, instead, focus on the life He has in store for you. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
