4 x 6 Plan | Read: Mark 7:31-37, Mark 8:1-10 & 1 Corinthians 14:26-40

They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.” (Mark 7:37)

Today, we read about a man who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, brought to Jesus to be healed. Jesus took the man aside, put His fingers into the man’s ears, spat, and touched the man’s tongue, and immediately the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he began to speak clearly.

This miraculous healing is a powerful reminder of the healing power of Jesus. The man’s physical disability was hindering his ability to communicate and connect with others, but Jesus restored his hearing and speech, making it possible for him to fully participate in community and relationships.

As we reflect on the reading, we can also see practical applications for our lives today. Just like the deaf man, we may face obstacles or challenges that hinder our ability to connect with others and participate fully in life. These obstacles could be physical, emotional, or spiritual in nature.

But just as Jesus had the power to heal the deaf man, He also has the power to heal and restore us. We can come to Him with our struggles, trusting in how much He truly loves us, and ask for His healing touch.

We can also be reminded of the importance of community and relationships. Helen Keller once said that being deaf was worse than being blind.  Having a son who’s deaf…that never seemed to make sense..until you think about the loneliness that comes from not being able to talk or connect with others.  The deaf man was now able to fully participate in community and relationships after his healing, and we too can benefit from the support and encouragement of others. We can reach out to friends, family, or our faith community for support and guidance as we navigate life’s challenges.
