Matthew 16:25-26 Growing up, I had a friend who was obsessed with Beanie Babies. If you don’t remember, Beanie Babies were tiny stuffed animals that were all the rage in the 90’s. Several people thought these toys would one day be collectibles, so they amassed hordes of the plastic pellet stuffed animals. Had my friend sold his Beanie Babies collection back then, he could have made a few thousand bucks. Today, though, he would probably have to pay someone to take them off his hands. He thought he was helping himself by saving them, but he was actually hurting himself. Sometimes, the more you try to save something, the more you lose. It doesn’t really make sense to us, but this same principle applies to every one of our lives. Jesus tells us in the Bible that anyone who tries to save their life will lose everything, but those who lose or give their life away, will one day save it. What Jesus means is that, those whose focus in life is on themselves will have nothing to show for their life when they get to the end of it. No amount of money, possessions, pleasure, or even accomplishments matter a whole lot when you get to the end of your life. It’s the people who spent their lives being generous and giving of themselves who will have everything when they reach the conclusion of their time on earth. Not only will what they’ve done live on through the people they have served, but they will also receive rewards from God for their love and sacrifice for Him and others. Don’t spend so much time trying to hold on to things that you think will make your life complete. Instead, spend your time giving of yourself to the people God has put in your path and let God make your life complete. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:

  1. What was the best part of your day?
  2. What was the toughest part of your day?
  3. Where did you mess up today?
  4. Where did you see God today?
Reflect: In what ways have you tried to “save” your own life? How might you “lose” your life in those areas instead? Pray: In your prayer time today, share with God the areas of your life that you’ve been selfish. Ask Him to help you to give of yourself in those areas instead.
