Read through the Gospels in a Year: Luke 20:41-47
Read the New Testament in a Year: Hebrews 1:10-14
Then Jesus said, “Why do people say that the Christ is the Son of David? In the book of Psalms, David himself says: ‘The Lord (God) said to my Lord (Christ): Sit by me at my right side, and I will put your enemies under your power.’ David calls the Christ ‘Lord.’ But the Christ is also the son of David. How can both these things be true?”
— Luke 20:41-44
As Jesus’ opponents repeatedly tried to “trip him up” with their religious questioning, Jesus turns the tables on them and asks them a question. As a descendant of King David, Jesus could claim to be David’s son. But, as Jesus points out using their own means of interpretation, David also calls the Messiah his LORD! How can this be so? Of course Jesus is not only taking part in religious banter, he is also trying to jolt them out of their steadfast desire to get rid of him and open their eyes to see who it is that chooses to walk among them—Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of David, and the Son of God.
