Matthew 5:14-16 Whenever I do something nice for my wife, I’m often met with a quick “what do you want?” Apparently, history has told her that whenever I am doing something nice, I am trying to butter her up because I want to buy something or do something that she won’t care too much for. While I’m trying to be better at doing things for her for no other reason that just to do something nice, I often find myself doing things for other people selfishly. Sure, I might be helping them out, but I’m also trying to help myself. Unfortunately, I think many of us share this same mindset when it comes to the good deeds we do. Sure we might be helping someone in a tough spot, showing God’s love in tangible ways, and serving others, but we often look for gratitude in return. We want people to see the good things we do and thank us. We want people to talk us up. Even worse, many times, we look for the people we serve to owe us something. This isn’t the proper motivation for serving others. The best thing we can do with our lives is to point people to our heavenly Father with how we live. Instead of focusing on whether or not I’m getting credit for the good deeds I do, I’m much better off focusing on whether or not the people around me are being pointed to God through my life. Don’t get caught up in doing everything you do for yourself. Allow your life to show others the love God has for them. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was the toughest part of your day?
- Where did you mess up today?
- Where did you see God today?
