Read Psalm 39:4-5 A few years back my family’s schedule had to rank in the Top 10 of craziness. It was that time of year when sport seasons overlapped. Our oldest daughter was finishing up volleyball but was also starting basketball. Our middle daughter was playing basketball but also involved with musical theater. Our youngest was a cheerleader and instead of playing some little league basketball, we decided to let her join a competitive cheerleading squad. My wife and I lived in our vehicles. The miles we traveled between practice and performances for our girls. Did I mention the trip to Disney? Psalm 39:4 is one of the most profound verses in the Bible. David is wanting to see his place when compared to God and His creation. When he asks to be shown his life’s end and the number of his days, it is not to get some inside information. He is not trying to figure out when he is going to die. He wants to be reminded he is not living forever. He then makes an observation in verse 5, “my days are a mere handbreadth”. A handbreadth is the width of your hand, your four fingers. He then says the span of my years is nothing before the God of the universe. This is a heavy verse with heavy implications. Are we so busy we need this type of reminder to get our attention? The family is important to God. Our children are important to God. We have one life and one family. God is interested what we do with our family. There is nothing wrong with activities whether it is sports, music, dance or theater. In fact, it can be good to do some of these. God simply wants to know which is more important, the family I have given you or the activities you found for them to do? Reflect: There is a quote, “Take care of the little things and big things will take care of themselves”. Are there some things or activities to which we can say no? It is amazing how difficult two letters can be to say! Are you afraid of not giving your kids all they deserve? Are you afraid you are cheating them? Let’s start at home with what’s important, family. If we can get God positioned correctly, everything else will fall into place. Pray: As you pray look at all your family does and ask God to help you prioritize and reorganize. Ask Him what’s important. Ask him to first in all your family does. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was the toughest part of your day?
- Where did you mess up today?
- Where did you see God today?
