Proverbs 17:4 When I started losing weight last year, many of my friends and family spoke up and said, “I’m so glad you’re losing weight. I’ve been really worried about you.” None of these people had said anything while I was in the process of putting on the weight. They didn’t mention anything until I was already doing something about it. Maybe it was to spare my feelings or because they were worried how I would react, but they had just stood by while I was harming myself physically by not speaking up to me. This is the same thing we do when we allow others to gossip to us. Many of us try to get ourselves off the hook by claiming we don’t gossip. But, even though we aren’t the ones actually saying the gossip, we are still gossipping if we allow others to share gossip with us. It can be difficult to stop someone when they are sharing things that shouldn’t be discussed. You can worry about hurting their feelings or be concerned with how they will react, but not allowing someone to gossip to you about someone else. Many people will often say, “I’m just saying this because I would say it to their face.” Our response should be for them to go do just that instead of sharing with us. How often do you get sucked into other people’s gossip? // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:

  1. What was the best part of your day?
  2. What was the toughest part of your day?
  3. Where did you mess up today?
  4. Where did you see God today?
Reflect: Reflect on how often you get sucked into the gossip of other people? Why do you think it’s so easy to get sucked in and so hard to put a stop to it. Pray: Ask God to help you put an end to the gossip you listen to. Ask God to help you discover how to navigate those situations in a sensitive way.
