Bible In A Year | Read: Matthew 24

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matthew 24:36-44

Overview of Chapter

The Temple in Jerusalem during Jesus’ life was an amazing structure. The Jews, Jesus’ disciples included, were very proud they had such an impressive house of worship. Jesus lets his disciples know that it will be completely destroyed. The prophecy is fulfilled in 70 AD when the Romans invade to put down a rebellion. Jesus also describes what things are going to be like when he returns. The natural disasters, persecution, conflict and false religious leaders could describe any generation since Jesus’ death, but just before Jesus’ return, the events will threaten all human life (verse 22).

Although we should do all we can to bring people to Christ and spread justice to all people, the ultimate solution is Christ’s return. Jesus tells us we should always be prepared for his return. We don’t want to be caught not doing what he would want us to do.

Thoughts on the verses

Just living life.

Jesus says that is what most people will be doing when He comes back. They will not be ready. The consequences are that these people will face Jesus – with nothing. They have spent their time living life for themselves and made no preparation for Jesus coming as King. This time, the King will not just clean His house, He will clean out His kingdom – all who do not want Him as King will be removed.

When will it happen? Only God knows. So be ready every day.

Prayer

Father, it is so easy to just be busy living life. Life is a challenge with all the problems that it throws at me – it can take absolutely all of my time and energy. If I am not careful, it stops me from having preparation time for eternity. Help me today to take time – praying, reading Your Word and building for eternity. Help me to love people like You love them. Help me to encourage the weary. Help me to make my life all about You rather than all about me. Give me joy today in doing these things.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action Step

What is God showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

Have you ever thought it would be cool to hear some C3 leaders discuss the daily verses, share about their lives and mostly just talk about nonsense?  Of course not!…even though nobody has ever thought that we are still doing it.  You can follow along with us each morning in a brand new podcast – Thursday Humble Pie & Awkward Pauses.
