Read 2 Samuel 11:6-18 We all deal with what the Bible calls our flesh. It’s our sin nature that we often try to cover up. While most of our cover ups do not compare to the political intrigue played out daily nor does they match up to an episode of Scandal, one truth connects all of them: we will do whatever it takes not to get caught. David’s cover up led to a dedicated soldier losing his life all to keep his dirty little secret. This is dangerous because sin operates most efficiently when it can operate in secrecy. In verses 6 and 7, David’s cover up begins with a lie. He sent a request to his captain, Joab, for an update regarding the ongoing battle and he wanted Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, to bring the update. Three attempts are now made to cover up David and Bathsheba’s sin. The first two attempts, verses 8 and 13, involved getting Uriah to sleep with his wife while in Jerusalem. In doing so, everyone would believe Uriah and Bathsheba conceived a child. The first two attempts also failed due to Uriah’s character and conscious. In verse 11, Uriah could not imagine sleeping in his bed or being with his wife while his brothers were in battle. The third attempt, however was successful because Uriah was “killed” in battle. David was so intent on covering this up he instructed his captain to place Uriah in the front of the battle and withdraw the troops from around him. David wanted him dead and what’s worse he sent the instructions by Uriah himself. What lengths David employed to hide adultery and a pregnancy. In addition to the beast being crafty, it blinds you. David was so blinded he actually believed his cover up worked. It was so successful, after the customary time of mourning, he married Bathsheba. Now no one would question the new baby. Reflect “Sin operates most efficiently when it can operate in secrecy”. Not only does it operate efficiently, it multiplies. The more we try to cover up and hide the beast, the more control it has over you. Break free today, stop the cover up. Remember 1 John 4:4, “…greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (ESV). Pray As you pray ask God to give you courage to confess sin. Ask Him to help you confess not cover up. Acknowledging and confessing sin will stop the beast in it’s track. Ask God to encourage you from His word. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:
