Galatians 2:20 In our day and age, a cross is a symbol of faith and hope. We wear a cross around our necks and put it up in our churches. We often use it as a logo of sorts that represents the Christian faith. However, when Jesus walked the earth, the cross was anything but a cute symbol. Instead, it was a symbol of death and punishment. Crucifixion was execution. When Jesus told His followers that they should “take up their cross,” they were no doubt confused. Being put to death on the cross was a punishment for those who had committed the worst crimes. When Jesus died on the cross, though. He changed everything. Jesus was completely innocent, but He was punished anyway. Jesus never sinned, but He still died a criminal’s death. He took this penalty, so that we wouldn’t have to. Because of His sacrifice, the cross is no longer a symbol of death and punishment, it’s a symbol of hope, faith, and love. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are accepting God’s forgiveness through what Jesus has done for us. We die to our former lives, so we can live with and for Christ. We all deserved death, but Christ took our place so we can spend eternity in Heaven with Him one day. The next time you see a cross, don’t just look past it as just some other decoration. Allow it to remind you of the innocent Son of God who died for you to give you life. // TWO-A-DAYS // GO A LITTLE FARTHER WITH YOUR DAILY DEVOTIONS // Go through these questions with your spouse, kids, or friend, or you can even journal about the answers to these questions:

  1. What was the best part of your day?
  2. What was the toughest part of your day?
  3. Where did you mess up today?
  4. Where did you see God today?
Reflect: What do you think Jesus meant when He told His followers to “take up their cross and follow Him.” What does that mean for you? Pray: As you pray today, spend several minutes just thanking God for what He did for you on the cross. Ask Him to help you take up your cross and follow Him.
