When God gave the law to His people, He could have started with “Here’s what I’m going to do to you if you don’t keep the rules I’m about to give you.” But that isn’t how He did it. He pointed out what He had already done for them, and what He could do in and through them in the future if they were obedient to Him. The basis of the law was relationship not fear. In God’s plan, the Israelites would obey out of gratitude for the things God had done for them and out of hope for what God would do in the future. Spend some time with God examining whether or not you obey God and, if you do, if it is out of fear or gratitude. Take a few minutes to pray that God would help you be more obedient through gratitude instead of fear.
