After God delivered the law, He caused it to thunder so loud that it made the Israelites afraid as lightning streaked across the sky. The people were reminded of the power and sheer awesomeness of God. This all powerful God was the one they would be offending when they broke these commandments. The people were terrified, but Moses spoke with compassion. He urged them not to be afraid, but to be in awe of God. The law doesn’t show us just how we should behave, it shows us our need for an awesome God like our God. That, even though we offend Him with our sin, and He is all good and all powerful, He still loves us and has mercy on us. Spend a few minutes today to thank God for His love and mercy for you in spite of your sin.
