Read: Luke 18:18-27
In past weeks, we’ve seen how consumerism inhibits our communion with Christ and how individualism can prevent us from participating in community. Here in the story of Zacchaeus, we see Jesus pointing out one of the primary barriers that anyone can face when he or she begins to move into mission. This barrier is materialism.
In our own lives, materialism plays the same role as it did with Zacchaeus. When we are caught up in materialism, our communities suffer. When we are buried in debt or concerned about our “stuff,” we lack time to build significant, deep relationships with each other. Our lives will begin to focus on things like security and competing with our neighbors for status and control rather than on the good news of the Gospel. To put it plainly, materialism poisons community.
whose stuff’ is your stuff anyway?
where did it all come from?
who ultimately gave it to you?
Materialism is the belief that the quality of one’s life is defined by what someone owns. This belief is what drives people to work too hard and neglect the important things. It will limit a person’s ability to experience community or extend the Kingdom in very clear ways.
Journal/Text Question: Do you love buying or getting new stuff??
Prayer Starter: Jesus, show me where materialism consumes my life.
