Read John 17:14-20
When I first became a Christian as a teenager, I thought being a “good” Christian meant you had to be kind of odd. All the “good” Christians I met wore odd clothes with Christian slogans on them, listened to odd music, and did just peculiar things. They would recite Bible verses about being different from the world, so you can be a good witness to others. I didn’t know what it meant to be a witness. I didn’t know anyone was on trial. Turns out, they just meant that you had to be odd in order to be a good example of Jesus Christ to those that don’t know Him.
The Bible does say that Jesus’ followers should be different from the world. He wants us to be weird. He wants us to do things in a different way. He wants us to live our lives according to his purposes instead of our own. It’s not the path that most people choose for their lives, but it’s the one God has called His people to.
The Bible never tells us that we need to be straight up odd in order to be light in our dark world. We don’t have to talk weird, have a Christian t-shirt, or a “MY Boss is a Jewish Carpenter” bumper sticker to share our faith with others. Jesus tells us to be in the world, just not of the world. It’s okay to not be odd, but God still wants you to live different. He still wants you to be weird.
